About Me
Madelyn Hanes
Investigative Journalist | News Reporting
Criminal Justice
As a passionate and driven student at Indiana University, I’m pursuing a Bachelor of Arts & Sciences degree with dual majors in Journalism (News Reporting & Editing) and Criminal Justice. With hands-on experience in investigative journalism and crime reporting, I am committed to uncovering the truth and shedding light on important stories that impact communities.
Currently, I serve as an Investigative Journalist at the Arnolt Center for Investigative Journalism, where I collaborate with professional media partners to produce in-depth investigative reports, leveraging public records, data analysis, and interviews. Recently, I contributed to a major project examining the enforcement of the Safe Drinking Water Act, focusing on the safety of lead and galvanized steel pipes.
In addition to my investigative work, I covered crime stories for the Indiana Daily Student, attended court hearings, crime scenes, and conducted interviews to provide context and insights into local law enforcement issues. As a News Desk Editor, I honed my leadership skills by overseeing a team of reporters, ensuring deadlines were met, and maintaining high editorial standards. I currently cover Indiana state government for the Indiana Daily Student.
Outside of journalism, I enjoy engaging in community service and leadership roles. As the Vice President of Standards and Values for Sigma Kappa Sorority, I work to uphold the chapter’s code of conduct while fostering unity and accountability. I’m also an active participant in philanthropy, raising funds for the Alzheimer’s Association and organizing events to support the cause.
When I’m not reporting I enjoy spending time reading, catching up on tv series, drawing and making Spotify playlists.
I’m excited to continue developing my skills as a storyteller and advocate for justice while pursuing opportunities that allow me to make an impact in both the media and criminal justice fields. Feel free to connect with me on LinkedIn or contact me via email to learn more about my work and experiences.
